The Shenzhen Component Index opened at 12,752.72 points, down 228.10 points, or 1.76 percent.

The Hang Seng Index opened at 25,460.42 points, down 375.15 points, or 1.45 percent.

The S&P/ASX 200 index opened at 8,434.40 points, down 118.30 points, or 1.38 percent.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average opened at 49,251.26 points, down 572.68 points, or 1.15 percent.

The Straits Times Index opened at 4,490.96 points, down 20.91 points, or 0.46 percent.
