MALE, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen has thanked the military and police for their "unwavering loyalty" to defend the government after thwarting what he called a "coup" attempt led by the country's chief justice, local media reported Wednesday.

Yameen, during a ruling party rally in capital Male, thanked the security forces for the protection of his administration.

Yameen also extended his gratitude to the Supreme Court on revoking last week's release order, saying this was a "well deserved victory."

Maldives has been plunged into a political crisis following last week's Supreme Court ruling ordering the release of nine opposition leaders including self exiled former president Mohamed Nasheed.

On Monday night, the president declared a 15-day state of emergency, urging all Maldivians to remain calm and restore normalcy.

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed were arrested shortly after the state of emergency was declared, on charges of plotting to overthrow the government.

Yameen, in his address to the nation on Tuesday, accused the chief justice of being bribed to issue last week's court order, in a bid to overthrow the government.

The Supreme Court rescinded its landmark ruling late Tuesday.

"This could not have been possible without the support of both military and police. They have done commendable work in upholding the Maldives Constitution and the state government," Yameen said.
